Photo of the Week: Eastport, Maine

Last summer on my way back from Newfoundland, I spent a night in Eastport, Maine. This town is literally on the edge of the United States – even my phone thought I was still in Canada.

Fishing is the main industry but there is a small tourism surge in the summertime, but nothing like Acadia and points south. There’s also a strong artisan community here, with several small galleries, a summer residency program and a variety of artist workshops. It’s actually a wonderful place to disconnect and dive into making new work. Just be sure to bring all the supplies you’re going to need because it’s remote.

I enjoyed poking around the harbor at dawn and meeting people living in the community. Everyone was so welcoming and I look forward to a return trip soon.
